There are thousands of personal finance blogs out there. If yours is one of them, but probably spend time wondering how to make yours stand out from the fray. There are plenty of SEO tricks to help elevate your blog in search results, but there is also something to be said for simply having something specific to say. Some of the best finance blogs stem from the creator’s personal experiences. By achieving wealth, eliminating debt, starting a successful business, or becoming more financially independent, you’ve done something that most people haven’t. I’ve given some guidelines to help you “write what you know” below.

1) What Realm of Personal Finance Do You Know the Most About?

This question and “What part of personal finance most interests you?” usually have the same answer. We learn about that which fascinates us. If you are writing about money at all, there is some specific corner that makes you tick. It’s best to focus on this in your writing. Usually this has something to do with your personal experience. Maybe you made a lot of money in real estate. Maybe you conquered tens of thousands of dollars in student loans and credit card debt. Now that you’ve done that thing and you reflect on it, you can see how there were a million little details that got you to your goal. If you write a blog post about each one of the experience details, you’ll have an awesome blog. There are lots of people out there who want to know how to do what you did. Tell them, and you’ll have a devoted reader base in no time.

2) What Do Lots of People Need to Know?

View your blog as an education service. The sad reality is that most people don’t know very much about personal finance. The soaring debt rates in the developed world are testimony to this fact. If that’s true, then there are a lot of people who are going to want to learn about various aspects of it. What specific finance need resonates the most with you – debt reduction? Early investment? Retirement? Prosper Lending? Financial news? By connecting your interests with a specific human need, you will naturally develop a much more specific blog, within the broad niche of personal finance.

3) What Areas of Personal Finance are Under-Exploited in Blogs?

For this, you will have to do some homework. Spend a few days combing through all the finance blogs you can find. Make a list of common themes and topics. Get a sense of the lay of the land and then take a look at what you can offer. Do you see a lack of focus on any one topic? Is there a population that doesn’t have much writing geared toward them? Is there an area that has way too much written about it? By finding a corner of the personal finance universe that is underpopulated, you stand a chance of making yourself stand out, simply by writing about this thing.

If you can satisfy the requirements in all three of these listings, you will have a good chance of having a successful blog. Combine this with your knowledge of SEO, keep your quantity and quality up, and your blog will be very visible online. Once you’ve done this, you may be able to start another, who knows?
